It used to be that you didn’t hit LoDo unless the Rockies were playing or you were under 25 and wanted to get your grind on at meat markets like Tavern, ViewHouse, or Beta. 1 Up and Wynkoop are just fine for drinks and a casual hang, but there wasn’t much else to bring people back down this way on a regular basis.

But things have changed round here. The renovated Union Station gives LoDo a totally different feel and is changing the game in terms of Denver’s urban atmosphere. Think of it as a much smaller version of San Francisco’s Ferry Building, but with no ocean. Denver has been dying for this kind of development and the result is a gorgeous space that’s a great spot for date night, day drinking, or a late night cocktail. Between Mercantile Dining & Provision, Stoic & Genuine, Terminal Bar, and The Cooper Lounge, there are suddenly good reasons to head downtown. Add Hopdoddy to the list as well, because these burgers are legit. Located in a new building just north of Union Station, Hopdoddy benefits greatly from the shine of its neighbor and is perfect for acquiring the meat sweats and ridiculous shakes. Milkshakes. Not trembles. On second thought, maybe both.

We hate to admit it, but the Texas takeover of Colorado appears complete. Drive around town and you’ll see more Longhorns logos on cars than the Buffs (okay, bad example given how terrible CU is) and we’re pretty sure the city of Houston annexed Telluride a while back. Hopdoddy’s arrival may well be the nail in the coffin. But if this is what defeat tastes like, things might not be so bad.

Food Rundown

Magic Shroom

One of the best mushroom and cheese combos we’ve seen on a burger. No BS. The goat cheese, mushroom and beef flavors hit hard right off the bat, but the mayo & basil pesto sauce finish will be what really kicks you in the face. In a good way.

Llano Poblano

Like a Montessori playground, all the kids/ingredients here are complimentary and play together well. A nice upgrade from the classic bacon cheeseburger with just enough spice to justify a chocolate shake to help quell the burn.

Buffalo Bill

We’re always down for a bison burger and this one isn’t fcking around. We added an egg because we go hard, but it doesn’t even need it. You’ll be catching feelings.

Greek

A really strong play and, perhaps, our favorite of the bunch. The lamb is well-spiced, super tender and this burger has more interesting flavors than most anything here. The sweet-salty feta and pickled veggies round things out nicely.

La Bandita

Vegetarians get some love too, but this is inherently drier than the rest. Throwing an egg on would be a good call (unless you’re vegan). The black bean-corn patty is THICK, with deceptive heat. Make sure you ask for the house made pepper sauce to go with. Love the pepita-studded bun.

Fries with Green Chile Queso

Solid shoestring fries taken next level with creamy, spicy green chile queso. Keep em comin’.

Shakes

You should definitely order a shake here. Just call them insta-diabetes, but damn if isn’t worth it. The salted caramel is out of this world, but you may want to go Lady & The Tramp with your companion to lessen the inevitable sugar crash.
