Sushi Taro is one of a few contenders for best sushi in the District, but most importantly, it stands out for coming in handy on so many occasions. Uses include but aren’t limited to: an anniversary or birthday dinner when you (preferably not you) are willing to spend $160 on the omakase, a meal with your visiting parents that they requested be quiet but not boring, and a low-key Wednesday night catch-up with your roommate. They also have a happy hour at the bar with half-priced sushi and drinks (Monday–Friday, 5:30–7PM).

It’s usually busy, but the tables aren’t on top of each other and it stays relatively quiet. It’s also east of Dupont Circle, so it feels a little distanced from the busyness of downtown. If you aren’t taking advantage of happy hour, you can sit at a hightop, or settle into a booth.

What we’re getting at is that Sushi Taro is pretty damn convenient. There’s fish on the menu for nearly every price point, and it has the right vibes for a neighborhood meal or a bigger night out. The only way you’ll do it wrong is by not getting involved with the large selection of sake.
