Chikarashi

At this point, there might be more poke shops than yoga studios in downtown Manhattan. OK, not quite. But there are a lot of fast casual places serving bowls of raw fish, and we're all for it.
Chikarashi on Canal Street, though, stands above the rest. Behind the counter, you'll see actual sushi chefs slicing fish, rather than pulling pre-chopped spicy tuna out of a vat. And unlike most shops, where you end up adding on way more spicy wasabi mayo and crunchy onions than you should have, Chikarashi has a few set bowls. They're balanced, and high quality. The interiors are sleek and modern, but there isn't much room to sit - plan to come here for takeout.
