There are a lot of ways Austin has changed for the worse. But it’s also become a hotbed for global deliciousness and, unlike the horrific traffic the newcomers bring with them, nobody is complaining.

G’Raj Mahal is a prime example. Located in an old, beautifully-renovated bungalow home on Rainey Street, G’Raj not only serves quality Indian food, but also appeals with its neo-Austin chic-as-f*ck ambience. Like any wildly popular Austin spot, G’Raj started out as a food truck, but later expanded into this brick and mortar space with an expanded menu. And the menu is extensive. Unless you’re with a big group that’s down to share, you will be left making some hard decisions on which delicious path to choose. We can help with that down below, as there are some things you’re going to need on your table (as well as a few you can skip).

G’Raj is especially useful because it’s one of the only quality eating options on Rainey Street that isn’t a food truck. We are all for mobile restaurants, but if you’re staying at the nearby Hotel Van Zandt, or on a Rainey Street date, or hosting out-of-towners, you might want to mix it up with a proper sit-down experience. That said, in true Rainey fashion, G’Raj also has a fantastic bar and patio scene to help you continue your never-ending quest to find out which Austin vodka truly makes your life stories sound the most interesting to members of the opposite sex.

Food Rundown

Potato & Pea Samosas

A fried dumpling filled with smashed peas and potatoes. Tasty, but a little on the dry side, so dip them in the chutneys they’re served with.

Garlic Naan

Naan is the ridiculously delicious Middle Eastern starch vessel served before your meal, and G’Raj’s version doesn’t disappoint. There are a variety of versions, but our favorite is the garlic. It’s fantastic.

Chicken Tandoor

This is a little underwhelming. Have you ever had the Trader Joe’s boxed tomato soup? It tastes like they used that instead of a sauce handed down over generations.

Chicken Tikka Masala

The fact that we can’t really remember anything about this tells you what you need to know about it.

Seafood Coconut Curry

Our favorite item on the menu, which we woke up thinking about the next day. Scallops, shrimp, and fish, all swimming around in a red curry sauce. This is a triumph.
