Xixa, pronounced “shiksa,” is a Mexican-inspired spot from the people behind Traif, which is located next door. It’s been open for a while - since before Williamsburg was just another Soho. And in its earlier years, we would have recommended it for a fun night out with friends or dates or strangers. But it doesn’t feel anywhere near as exciting as it once did, and the menu now has more misses than hits. The carrots “elote” are covered with so much white sauce that you can barely taste the vegetable underneath, there’s a ceviche that’s unsettlingly more like a fruit salad, and we’ve made better guacamole at home. But the tacos are still good. Between those and the long tequila and mezcal list, Xixa could be a solid dinner-at-the-bar choice if you live in the neighborhood.
