As a Detroit native, I spent my childhood summers, and what some in society would call “adult” summers, going to camp in northern Michigan. Frida, bless her soul, was the camp’s head cook for a long time, a really long time. On top of cooking for a bunch of pain in the ass kids, Frida was known for two specialties, fried chicken and bread pudding. Her fried chicken was legit, but the bread pudding was out of this world magical.

To this day bread pudding remains one of my favorite things to eat, so what do you think happened when I found out there’s a Lakeview joint serving bread pudding pancakes? Come on, you’re not gonna not get Randy Jackson’s autograph on a samurai sword.

Bread pudding pancakes may have initially got us in the door, but holy sh*t is Southport Grocery the definition of chronic brunch. Everything on the menu tastes phenomenal, from the seemingly simple breakfast sandwich to the gluten free cupcake pancakes, and you might as well throw a grown up pop tart in the mix just to be safe. We always come and zone in on the more breakfast like items, but our wandering eyes have caught some awesome looking sandwiches, including a couple vegetarian friendly items plus a good looking burger.

It’s not a very big place, with maybe 15 tables at most, and the small patio with some additional seating out front won’t do you any good most of the year. It’s also called Southport Grocery and Cafe for a reason. Don’t overlook the various hot sauces, syrups, jams, coffees, spices, and other fun stuff on the shelves before you walk out.

Weekend waits should be expected, but the stretch of businesses along Southport just south of Addison will help you kill some time. Staring at the menu will not help kill time, but you’ll enjoy it anyway.

Bread Pudding Pancakes

MAGNA CARTA. HOLY GRAIL. Little known fact, Jay Z and Justin Timberlake’s hit album and number one single were named in honor of these pancakes. Don’t be shy with the vanilla anglaise.

Red Potato Mash

Sounds simple, and it is, but tastes so good. They don’t really do hash browns or home fries, so expect these mashed potatoes with a lot of the egg dishes instead. No complaints.

The Grown-Up Pop Tart

Probably not quite what you imagine based on the name, but it’s a sweet baked good ideal for sharing. Stuffed with local fruit preserves, mascarpone cheese, and vanilla walnuts, this pastry is grilled golden brown and dusted with powdered sugar over the top.

The Breakfast Sandwich

It’s got the same ingredients as every other breakfast sandwich, Southport Grocery just does it better. The pepper jelly vinaigrette is a nice touch, and don’t be afraid to get bacon instead of sausage if you choose.

Hash

A nice veggie hash with shredded potatoes, red onion, mushroom, peppers, and white cheddar, topped with scrambled eggs and chive-sour cream. May not have the sex appeal as some other dishes, but it comes with the same great flavors.

The Southern

An omelet with pimiento cheese and sausage, plus that chronic red potato mash and a jam-filled buttermilk biscuit. A no brainer if southern comfort flavors appeal to you.

Brisket and Gravy

Two fried eggs over a halved buttermilk biscuit, swimming in an ocean of brisket filled gravy. It’s thick, rich, creamy, delicious, and will induce a nap. It’s also one of Southport’s signature items.

Veggie Sandwich

There’s a 0% chance I ever eat this sandwich, but that’s only because I’ll never get past the breakfast options above. Friends who like these sort of things (veggies) say this is a really good sandwich, and I believe them.
