There’s nothing cute about Defonte’s, and that’s exactly why we love this old-school Red Hook spot. Come for gigantic heroes stu ed with homemade ingredients, and expect to need a nap afterwards.

What To Get: Turkey with Turkey Gravy, Giuseppe Special

What It’s Near: Coffey Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park

The second coming of Court Street Grocers in Greenwich Village is the best thing to happen to our lunch routine in a long time. The menu is long, but the good news is you can’t mess this up.

What To Get: Yam and Cheese, Clean Turkey, Italian Combo, The Droopy

What It’s Near: Washington Square Park

There are a lot of places to get a pastrami sandwich in this city, but we’re all in on Harry & Ida’s: the pastrami is thick-cut and insanely flavorful, and the fancy toppings take it to another level.

What It’s Near: Tompkins Square Park

This fancy Williamsburg grocery store not only makes a killer sandwich, but also excellent espresso drinks. Afternoon pick-me-up achieved.

Alidoro is proof you don’t need much to make a perfect sandwich. These are simple, outstanding Italian combinations - our favorite is just mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, and dressing.

What To Get: The Matthew

What It’s Near: Washington Square Park

Many good sandwich places get by on great bread or great meat. But the beauty of the Lamazou sandwich is that every ingredient in it is incredible.

What To Get: Milano, Caprice de Lamazou, Troubadour

What It’s Near: Madison Square Park

A sandwich operation from team behind the butcher shop of the same name, these outstanding creations are (unsurprisingly) all about the meat. You could share one, but you shouldn’t.

What To Get: Italian, Hot Chicken, or Roast Beef

What It’s Near: McCarren Park

Skip your usual Saturday morning bodega sandwich routine and get to this little Greenpoint co ee shop for their Kwa’Son, an insanely good combination of goat cheese, avocado, and egg on a croissant.

What To Get: Kwa’son (only served until noon) or Zappie What It’s Near: McGolrick Park, Transmitter Park, McCarren Park

We have no idea why this classic Italian deli flies under the radar - they make an absolutely bangin’ chicken cutlet sandwich (but you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu).

What To Get: Chicken Cutlet with Broccoli Rabe (add Pesto), Chicken Parm, Italian Special What It’s Near: Washington Square Park
